Application Process
Step 1: Submit an application
In December of each year, we open the Charter school application for the upcoming school year. Families have until mid-February to apply to be included in the lottery. Applications submitted after the deadline specified on the application will not be included in the lottery but will be added to the bottom of the grade-specific waitlist in the order received.
Step 2: Come for an information session and tour
We strongly encourage all applicants to sign up to attend one of our Prospective Family information sessions to learn more about our school and about Montessori education. See if our school and the Montessori philosophy is the right fit for your family. If there are no sessions scheduled and your child has been offered a spot at our school, please give us a call to arrange a tour. We cannot offer individual tours to families until their student is #10 or lower on the waitlist for grades K-1 or #5 or lower for grades 2-8.
Step 3: Check your email and accept your spot
Beginning in early March, make sure you are checking your email regularly. Following our Charter School lottery, all applicants will receive an email with an offer of enrollment or a waitlist spot (you do not need to be present at the lottery). If your child is offered an enrollment spot, you will have a limited amount of time to accept the spot and then one week following acceptance to turn in the required documents to finalize your child’s enrollment. We will offer enrollment spots throughout the summer and potentially into the first couple weeks of school until we are fully enrolled. Don’t miss your offer!
Please see our Admissions Policy for more details. For questions, please contact Lottery & Admissions Coordinator Susannah Hunter. Si necesitas asistencia en Espanol, por favor llama a Noemi Plata, (919) 240-7787 ext. 201.

Please apply for the next sequential grade for your student unless you have documentation from your child’s current school principal recommending a retention. Once enrolled, Willow Oak Montessori administration will determine the appropriate grade placement for each student based on factors such as age, maturity, and past academic background. We are unable to discuss the specifics of a child’s academic situation until they are officially enrolled at our school.
-
According to the State of North Carolina Department of Non-Public Education, the grade level of home-schooled students is determined by the Home School Administrator. As such, you may apply for a spot in the grade that follows the grade that the child is currently enrolled in. Once enrolled, Willow Oak Montessori administration will determine the appropriate grade placement for each student based on factors such as age, maturity, and past academic background.
-
In the likely scenario that we have more applicants than available spots in our school, a lottery will be conducted to fill the spots and generate a waitlist. Willow Oak Montessori currently uses Integrity6 software to conduct the lottery. This software has the capability to accurately run our current lottery process. In accordance with our Admissions Policy, at least one impartial community member will be present to observe the lottery.
-
Siblings will each have their own grade-specific waitlist number except in cases of twins, triplets, or other multiple birth siblings who will receive the same waitlist number and be admitted together. Once a student enrolls and attends the Charter School, other siblings will have priority in subsequent years’ lotteries, however, there is no guarantee of admittance.
-
Yes. Children and grandchildren of full-time employees or school board members and siblings of current Charter school students receive priority. We also have an Economic Disadvantage Weighted lottery that gives additional weight to applications from families that qualify for free or reduced lunch based on family income. To read more, see our Admissions Policy.

We wish we could! We have been investigating this, and it is not financially possible at this time. However, we are working out how we might make this a possibility in Willow Oak's future. At the start of each school year, we will do our best to help connect Willow Oak households to one another so that you might form carpools or help with driving for students who live near you or on your way to school. Please reach out to the Main Office if you need help with transportation and we will do our best to help you!

At this time, our school participates with MyHotLunchbox to offer a prepared lunch for a fee one day a week. Families who qualify for free or reduced lunch based on the federal income scale receive a discount. We also seek to assist any family that needs additional nutrition assistance. We ask all families to self-identify if they would qualify for assistance so we can provide support.
